π Need Shelter Right Now? Read This.
If you are homeless or about to lose your housing, help is available today. Follow these steps in order.
STEP 1 β Call 2-1-1 (Most Important)
π Dial 211
π https://www.211.org
Tell them:
βI am homeless and need emergency shelter.β
211 can help you find:
- Emergency shelters
- Warming shelters / cooling centers
- Motel vouchers (when available)
- Outreach teams
- Food, hygiene, and clothing resources
If you donβt have phone minutes, most public phones and shelters allow free calls to 211.
STEP 2 β If Itβs After Hours or an Emergency
If shelters are closed or you are in danger:
π Call 911 and say:
βI am homeless and unsafe and need emergency assistance.β
This is appropriate if:
- Weather is extreme (cold, heat, storms)
- You feel physically unsafe
- You are sick, injured, or at risk
STEP 3 β Walk In to a Local Shelter or Day Center
If you can travel safely, go in person.
Ask the front desk or staff:
βDo you have an open bed tonight, or can you refer me to one?β
If they are full, ask:
βWho else should I contact tonight?β
Shelters often know about last-minute openings that donβt show online.
STEP 4 β If You Are in Crisis or Feeling Overwhelmed
You are not alone.
π 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
π https://988lifeline.org
Call or text 988 if:
- You feel hopeless or overwhelmed
- Youβre thinking about harming yourself
- You need someone to talk to right now
They can also help connect you to local shelter and outreach services.
STEP 5 β Be Persistent
Shelter availability changes daily and even hourly.
If youβre told βnoβ:
- Call back later
- Ask for a referral
- Ask about waiting lists
- Ask about outreach teams
Persistence saves lives.
You Matter
Needing shelter is not a failure.
Asking for help is a strong and necessary step.
If you need help figuring out what to say when you call, reach out. Someone will help you.
